What Is The History Of Art Deco Clocks? The art deco design movement was originally conceived in France in the early 1900's. It swept away the Victorian period and endorsed the new machine age. By the time the 1920's and 1930's rolled around, clock design was becoming heavily influenced by this new era. During that decade, no object was able to escape the streamline touch of art deco and that includes clocks. Their cases often reflected the geometric architecture that was popular during that time. In Europe, the French and the Swiss were considered the leading producers of art deco clocks. The French excelled in clocks made of onyx, marble, brass and chrome that could be set on a mantle. A lot of these types of clocks had columns on their sides and Roman numerals for numbers. Art deco clocks that were designed to sit on a desk typically had a base of marble with nickel feet. The clock was often flanked by a pair of inkwells and contemporary clock collectors today use them to hold paper clips and other office items. Some of the French clocks made during this time were often paired with bronze figurines. Animals were also common with lovebirds and gazelles being popular choices. Beyond the desktop and the mantel clocks, the French also produced grandfather clocks in the art deco style. Many were made with rosewood and had silver-finished faces with clear glass on the pendulum doors. Some famous French art deco clocks designers included Edgar Brandt who created hand-wrought, forged iron clocks that sat on bases of marble. Cartier also made a variety of different clocks including some square travel clocks that had gold hands and black enamelled handles. Not to be outdone, the Swiss were also master art deco clock makers. Arther ImHof produced clocks that were made of amber glass and chromed bronze. In the United States clockmakers such as Ingraham, Seth Thomas and Telechron all produced art deco clocks for the home. The SK141 electric kitchen wall clock by Ingraham had a black wood case finished with chrome trim. Telechron was a company that made good use of Catalin, which it dyed to butterscotch hues. Before you get the overall impression that all clocks made during the art deco era were nothing more than somber expressions of serious design, there were also charming novelty clocks being produced as well. |
